Data Hygiene: The Unglamorous Foundation of Good Decisions
No dashboard or AI can compensate for dirty data; data hygiene is the real first step toward data-driven decisions.
Many companies want to jump straight to dashboards or advanced analytics while their underlying data — customer names, order status, dates — is inconsistent and error-ridden. The result is decisions built on wrong numbers.
Signs of dirty data
- One customer recorded under different names or formats across systems
- Empty fields or default values that were never updated
- Duplicate data nobody is responsible for cleaning
Data hygiene isn’t a one-time project
Cleaning data once isn’t enough; you also need data-entry rules (form validation, required fields) so dirty data doesn’t build back up.
Start from a single source of truth
The end goal is one reliable source for every key piece of data — not different versions scattered across spreadsheets, emails, and various tools.
